PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. This book makes no pretence of giving to the world a new theory of the intellectual operations. Its claim to attention, if it possess any, is grounded on the fact that it is an attempt not to supersede, but to embody and systematize, the best ideas which have been either promulgated on its subject by speculative writers, or conformed to by accurate.

Inductive reasoning is reasoning in which the premises seek to supply strong evidence for (not absolute proof of) the truth of the conclusion. This is in opposition to deductive reasoning or abductive the conclusion of a deductive argument is certain, provided the premises are certain, the truth of the conclusion of an inductive argument is probable, based.
